Location: Rajnandgaon, India

Following continuous rainfall since Saturday night, the Rajnandgaon Municipal Corporation launched an extensive response on Sunday morning, with Mayor Madhusudan Yadav, Municipal Commissioner Atul Vishwakarma, Corporation Chairman Topendra Singh Paras Verma and Health Department In-charge Member Shaiky Bagga inspecting waterlogged localities and reviewing drainage operations across the city.

The inspection covered Chikhli, Indira Nagar, Nandai, Basantpur District Hospital, Mohara, Lakholi and other affected areas. During the visit, officials reviewed the cleaning of drains and canals in both the inner and outer parts of the city. JCB machines were deployed to remove waste obstructing drains, while temporary earthen channels were excavated in waterlogged locations to facilitate the quick discharge of accumulated rainwater.

Ward councillors, along with the Executive Engineer, technical officers and sanitation teams, remained deployed in their respective areas from early morning to oversee water drainage and cleaning operations. District Collector Jitendra Yadav also continued to monitor the situation throughout the day.

Mayor Madhusudan Yadav and Commissioner Atul Vishwakarma reviewed the impact of heavy rainfall in residential and low-lying areas and directed officials to expedite water drainage through JCBs and municipal field teams. At the Mamta Nagar underbridge, pumps were installed to remove accumulated water.

The civic team also inspected G.E. Road, Basantpur District Hospital, Hat Bazaar, Nandai, Indira Nagar, Rajiv Nagar, R.K. Nagar, Mamta Nagar Underbridge, Motipur, Kailash Nagar, Lakholi, Keshar Nagar and low-lying settlements in Chikhli. In areas where rainwater had accumulated around houses, temporary earthen drains were excavated to facilitate water discharge. JCBs were also used to remove waste and obstructions from drains where construction or debris had blocked the flow of water.

The Mayor said that even light rainfall often leads to waterlogging in low-lying settlements and directed officials to ensure regular cleaning of drains and major canals to minimise flooding. He added that just as raising the level of the District Hospital premises had resolved waterlogging inside the hospital, the ongoing drainage infrastructure projects across the city are expected to significantly reduce similar problems during future monsoon seasons.

Mr. Yadav said construction work is currently underway on the Nar Kanhaiya drain, which passes through Indira Nagar and Nandai, where narrow and unlined sections are being reconstructed. The project is presently progressing in the Lohara Bada area, and while construction activities are causing temporary inconvenience, they are expected to provide long-term relief. He added that work is also in progress to develop the drain leading towards Gokul Nagar, and completion of these projects is expected to substantially reduce waterlogging in the coming years.

Municipal Commissioner Atul Vishwakarma instructed technical officers and sanitation personnel to ensure immediate drainage of water from low-lying localities and pothole-prone areas by creating temporary channels wherever required. He also directed that all wards maintain regular sanitation and waste collection operations.

The Commissioner instructed sanitation inspectors and ward in-charges to identify waterlogging-prone locations in their respective jurisdictions and report them to senior officials for necessary action. Technical officers were also asked to conduct continuous field monitoring and respond promptly to emerging situations.

He further directed officials assigned to the Taka Ghar Control Room to remain available in all three shifts and instructed the civic administration to keep essential equipment ready to deal with waterlogging or flood-like situations. Any complaints received from the public, he said, should be immediately communicated to the concerned officials and response teams for prompt action.
