Self-help groups are playing an important role in strengthening the economic position of rural women and helping them become financially independent. Through the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) Bihan, women are undertaking savings, credit and livelihood activities to improve the financial condition of their families.
The Lakhpati Didi initiative is providing women with opportunities to strengthen their livelihoods and raise their annual family income above ₹1 lakh. One such inspiring story is that of Phoolbai Jadhav, a Lakhpati Didi from Murmunda village in Dongargarh development block, who has transformed herself from a homemaker into a successful businesswoman.
From Homemaker to Entrepreneur
Phoolbai Jadhav joined the Jai Maa Gayatri Self-Help Group and decided to start an individual livelihood activity. She initially took a ₹10,000 loan from the group to purchase a sewing machine and began sewing work.
She later planned to start a cloth shop and a fancy store but did not have sufficient capital to establish the business. Under the Bihan scheme, she obtained a ₹50,000 loan from the Village Organisation along with a ₹15,000 loan from RF funds and started operating a cloth shop and fancy store.
With hard work and dedication, she expanded the business and repaid the loan taken from the Village Organisation ahead of schedule, along with interest.
Bank Loan Helped Expand the Business
To further expand her cloth shop and fancy store, Phoolbai Jadhav obtained a ₹5 lakh bank loan.
She used the loan to expand the shop and increase the variety of clothing and fancy items available. This provided customers with more choices and helped her take the business forward.

Family Income Rises to ₹1.32 Lakh
Phoolbai Jadhav said that before joining the self-help group, she was a homemaker managing family responsibilities. Before starting the business, her family earned ₹72,000 annually from agriculture and wage labour.
At present, the cloth shop and fancy store generate approximately ₹60,000 in additional annual income. Combined with income from agriculture and wage labour, the family’s total annual income has increased to ₹1.32 lakh.
With this increase in income, Phoolbai Jadhav has established herself as a Lakhpati Didi while also strengthening her family’s financial position.
“Business Income Has Given Me a Sense of Independence”
Phoolbai Jadhav said the income generated through her business has given her a sense of self-reliance and economic empowerment. She is also contributing to meeting the needs of her family through her earnings.
She expressed her gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai for the support received through the National Rural Livelihood Mission Bihan.
