Women have long been regarded as a symbol of strength in Indian society—bearers of civilization, culture, courage and compassion. At times gentle and nurturing, and at others resolute with iron determination, women represent an indispensable force in shaping society. As nearly half of the nation’s population, their contribution to India’s development is both significant and transformative.

Today’s women, driven by confidence, dedication and hard work, are achieving remarkable success across diverse fields. From stepping beyond the traditional confines of the household to excelling in education, governance, politics, the armed forces, media and various professional institutions, women are continuously redefining possibilities. Balancing family responsibilities alongside professional commitments, they are setting new benchmarks of achievement.

The thoughts of Swami Vivekananda remain profoundly relevant: the true measure of a nation’s progress lies in the status and empowerment of its women.

Across the urban and rural areas of the district, a visible wave of change is underway. Government initiatives aimed at women’s welfare have brought significant awareness and empowerment, particularly in rural communities. Women today are increasingly engaged and informed about issues such as education, health, sanitation and nutrition.

Financial empowerment through welfare schemes

A key initiative in this direction is the Mahtari Vandan Yojana, under which eligible women receive a monthly assistance of ₹1,000. In Rajnandgaon district, 24 instalments have been disbursed so far, transferring approximately ₹578 crore directly into the bank accounts of beneficiaries.

Women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have also emerged as powerful instruments of economic empowerment in rural areas. In the district, 4,920 SHGs have been linked to banks and provided loans worth ₹133.39 crore. Additionally, 829 women entrepreneurs have received loans worth ₹10.11 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, enabling them to start small businesses and become financially independent.

Women at the forefront of water conservation

Women have also played a pivotal role in environmental initiatives such as the district administration’s Mission Jal Raksha campaign aimed at water conservation. Social activist and Phoolbasan Bai Yadav, along with her team, has been actively working to spread awareness about sustainable water practices.

Innovative measures including recharge soft borewells, sand-filter based percolation tanks, injection wells to replenish groundwater, and water conservation structures in both hilly and low-lying regions have been implemented. Notably, more than 70% participation in these initiatives has come from women, highlighting their commitment to sustainable development.

Welfare schemes supporting women and girls

Several government schemes have been instrumental in strengthening the socio-economic position of women and girls. The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana has encouraged families to invest in the future of the girl child, while the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana provides financial assistance of ₹5,000 to women during their first pregnancy.

Programs such as the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana have provided LPG connections to rural households, significantly easing the burden of cooking for women. Similarly, the Jal Jeevan Mission has ensured access to safe drinking water through household tap connections, saving both time and effort for women in rural communities.

Focus on maternal health and wellbeing

Under the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan, specialised prenatal check-ups are conducted on the 9th and 24th of every month by gynecologists. Over the past year, 15,386 pregnant women have undergone medical examinations, with high-risk cases identified for special monitoring. Additionally, 45 women received free sonography services.

Through the Healthy Woman, Empowered Family Campaign, specialist medical camps have been organised at Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, primary health centres and community health centres. The district recorded over 227,107 beneficiaries, the highest in the state under this initiative.

Further support has been provided under the Mini Mata Mahtari Jatan Scheme, benefiting 7,232 women with financial assistance totaling ₹14.46 crore. Meanwhile, the Didi E-Rickshaw Assistance Scheme has enabled 24 women to receive financial support of ₹24 lakh, helping them pursue livelihood opportunities.

Collectively, these initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to strengthening women’s empowerment and ensuring their active participation in social and economic development. As women continue to rise across sectors, they are not only transforming their own lives but also shaping a more inclusive and progressive society.
