Tension prevailed near Rajnandgaon after the death of a factory employee in a road accident triggered protests and a highway blockade, which was later called off following an agreement on compensation and pension benefits for the victim’s family.
The deceased, 54-year-old Tukaram Sahu, a resident of Anjora village, was employed at Bhilai Conductors Private Limited. According to reports, he died in a road accident while on duty when he had gone to a weighbridge (dharamkanta) for official work. Following his death, family members and villagers demanded adequate compensation and reached Somni Police Station with the body to press their demands.
On receiving information, Congress district president Vipin Yadav arrived at the spot along with party supporters. Discussions were held between local administrative officials, including the tehsildar, and the factory management, but no immediate consensus was reached. Subsequently, agitated villagers and family members placed the body on the national highway near the Anjora bypass and staged a blockade (chakkajam), disrupting traffic movement for a considerable period.

Considering the seriousness of the situation, senior officials from the district administration and police reached the protest site to restore order and facilitate negotiations. Factory owner Udit Rathi was called to the venue, and a meeting was conducted in the presence of the administration with a delegation comprising Vipin Yadav, Rahul Tiwari, Anees Khan, Chumman Sahu, Angeshwar Deshmukh, and the deceased’s family members.
After prolonged discussions, the factory management agreed to provide immediate financial assistance of ₹5 lakh, along with approximately ₹23 lakh as additional compensation, taking the total relief package to ₹28 lakh. The management also consented to provide lifelong pension support to the deceased worker’s wife. Following the agreement, protesters withdrew the blockade and normal traffic movement was restored.
Speaking after the resolution, Vipin Yadav stated that the Congress party would always stand with workers to safeguard their rights and ensure justice in such cases. Officials said timely intervention by the administration helped prevent escalation and ensured a mutually acceptable settlement.
The incident once again highlighted concerns over workplace safety, compensation mechanisms, and the vulnerability of contractual and industrial workers in accident-related fatalities.
