In a major crackdown on anti-social elements creating fear and disturbance in the city, Basantpur Police have arrested four accused involved in allegedly extorting money from passersby for alcohol and assaulting those who refused to pay. The action follows a recent incident of violence in the Sabjiganj vegetable market area, which prompted police to launch a focused operation against the suspects.
According to police, the accused would stop people on the streets and demand money to purchase alcohol. Those who refused were allegedly subjected to assault, verbal abuse and threats. Following reports of such incidents, particularly the recent altercation in the Sabjiganj market, police treated the matter seriously and initiated an investigation to identify and apprehend those involved.
Weapons Recovered During Police Action
During the operation, police recovered a knife and wooden sticks allegedly used in the commission of the offences. Interrogation of the accused reportedly led to information regarding several other incidents, helping investigators uncover multiple cases linked to the group.
Police officials stated that the arrested individuals are habitual offenders and have previous criminal cases registered against them. After completing the necessary legal procedures, all four accused were produced before the court and subsequently remanded to judicial custody.
