In a ceremony steeped in political significance, Janata Dal (United) supremo Nitish Kumar was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Bihar for an unprecedented ninth term on Wednesday evening, reinforcing the National Democratic Alliance’s firm grip on the state. The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at a simple yet dignified function held at the Raj Bhavan. Alongside Nitish Kumar, senior BJP leaders Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha took oath as Deputy Chief Ministers, reflecting the power-sharing formula within the NDA. A total of 24 ministers – 12 from JD(U), 11 from BJP, and one from HAM(S) – were also inducted into the cabinet.

Moments after the ceremony concluded, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended heartfelt congratulations to the veteran leader. “Congratulations to Shri Nitish Kumar Ji on taking oath as Bihar’s Chief Minister. He is an experienced administrator with a proven track record of good governance for many years. My best wishes to him for his tenure ahead,” the Prime Minister stated, underlining the strong bond between the two leaders who have been allies for much of the past decade.

Nitish Kumar’s return to the chief minister’s chair comes barely months after the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, in which the NDA secured a comfortable majority. At 74, Nitish now surpasses the record previously held by former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Sheikh Abdullah and becomes the only leader in independent India to assume the chief ministership of a state nine times.

Known as ‘Sushasan Babu’ for his emphasis on governance and development, Nitish Kumar has dominated Bihar politics for two decades. His tenure has seen landmark initiatives such as the prohibition policy, empowerment of women through reservation in panchayats and government jobs, and a massive expansion of rural roads and electricity connectivity. Supporters credit him with pulling Bihar out of the “jungle raj” era of the 1990s and early 2000s, while critics point to persistent challenges in education, healthcare, and large-scale migration of labour.

The new government is expected to prioritize the continuation of the ‘Saat Nischay-2’ development agenda, faster implementation of central schemes, and creation of ten lakh jobs – a key promise made during the election campaign. Infrastructure projects, including new expressways, airports, and industrial corridors, are also high on the agenda.

As Nitish Kumar begins yet another innings, political observers note that this term may well be his last as chief minister, with speculation already rife about grooming a successor within JD(U). For now, the focus remains on delivering development and maintaining the delicate coalition chemistry that has kept the NDA intact in Bihar.

With the Prime Minister’s unequivocal endorsement and a fresh mandate, Nitish Kumar embarks on his ninth term determined to leave a lasting legacy in the state he has shaped like no other leader in recent history.
