In a strategic masterstroke to cement coalition harmony after its landslide victory, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has finalized a groundbreaking cabinet expansion formula for Bihar: one ministerial berth for every six MLAs. The move ensures proportional representation across allies and sets a new benchmark for coalition governance in the state.With the NDA commanding an overwhelming 202 seats in the 243-member Bihar Assembly, the formula translates into a jumbo ministry of approximately 34–35 members, including the Chief Minister. Sources close to the negotiations confirm the likely distribution:

BJP (80 MLAs): 15–16 ministers
JD(U) (67 MLAs): 14–15 ministers
LJP (Ram Vilas) (19 MLAs): 3 ministers
HAM (Secular) (4 MLAs): 1 minister
RLM (1 MLA): 1 minister (independent ally)

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who will take oath for a record ninth term on November 17, is expected to retain key portfolios like Home and General Administration initially, while Deputy CM positions—likely two—will go to senior BJP and JD(U) leaders.The formula reflects BJP’s growing dominance within the alliance while accommodating JD(U)’s stature as the second-largest partner.

Chirag Paswan’s LJP(RV) is assured influential departments, possibly including a Deputy CM post, reinforcing his rising clout.Political analysts hail the “6-MLA rule” as a transparent, math-driven approach that minimizes infighting—a recurring issue in past NDA regimes. “This is coalition dharma redefined with arithmetic precision,” said a senior BJP functionary.
