The incident occurred around 10 AM at the facility in the Siltara industrial area, trapping over a dozen laborers under tons of debris. Eyewitnesses reported that the collapse happened during routine maintenance, possibly due to structural weakening from heavy monsoon rains earlier in the season. The victims, mostly migrant workers from neighboring states aged 25-40, were pronounced dead at a nearby hospital from crush injuries and suffocation. The injured are receiving treatment for fractures and internal trauma. Chhattisgarh Labour Minister Shiv Kumar Dahariya visited the site, ordering a magisterial inquiry and immediate compensation of Rs 5 lakh per deceased family under the state’s employee welfare scheme.

The plant management, yet to issue an official statement, faces scrutiny over alleged violations of safety norms, including outdated inspections. This tragedy adds to Chhattisgarh’s growing list of industrial mishaps—over 50 worker deaths reported in 2025—prompting calls from unions for stricter enforcement of the Factories Act. Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan expressed condolences, while the BJP and Congress traded blame over regulatory oversight in the state’s booming steel sector, which contributes 15% to its GDP.
