In a bold move to make Delhi cleaner and more sustainable, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched the ‘Delhi Ko Koode Se Azaadi’ campaign, a month-long cleanliness drive aimed at freeing the capital from garbage. Leading by example, CM Gupta personally wielded a broom to clean the premises of the Women and Child Development (WCD) office at ISBT Kashmere Gate, highlighting the deplorable state of government infrastructure while setting the tone for a citywide transformation.

The campaign, which runs from August 1 to August 31, 2025, is a historic initiative that unites multiple agencies, including the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Public Works Department (PWD), Delhi Police, and New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), to tackle the city’s garbage crisis. During her visit to the WCD office, CM Gupta expressed dismay at the dilapidated condition of the building, noting leaking roofs and unsafe ceiling fans, issues that have persisted since a fire in 2021.

“It’s disheartening to see our officers working in such conditions. This campaign is not just about cleaning streets but also ensuring dignified workplaces,” she said while clearing e-waste, old files, and posters from the office.CM Gupta criticized the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for neglecting government offices while spending lavishly on projects like the ‘Sheesh Mahal.’ She announced plans for a new Secretariat to centralize and modernize government departments, promising better working conditions for employees.

The ‘Delhi Ko Koode Se Azaadi’ campaign also includes door-to-door cleanliness drives, community participation through Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), and ward-level competitions to encourage civic responsibility, with rewards for the cleanest areas.

Drawing inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the campaign has garnered support from local leaders, including Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh, who called it a collective step toward a “beautiful, healthy, and dignified capital.” The initiative also focuses on removing illegal hoardings, desilting drains, and addressing civic issues like stray animal control and waterlogging to ensure a holistic urban facelift.

CM Gupta urged Delhi’s citizens to join the movement, stating, “Cleanliness is a collective responsibility. Let’s make this campaign a people’s movement to transform Delhi into a city we can all be proud of.” With daily inspections, strict accountability for officials, and a budget of ₹5 crore allocated by the MCD, the campaign aims to deliver visible results by the end of August, marking a significant milestone in Delhi’s journey toward becoming garbage-free.
