Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday evening for a two-day visit to assess the security situation in the Union Territory, marking his first trip to the region since Operation Sindoor. The visit comes in the wake of recent cross-border hostilities and the devastating Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists.

On Thursday, Shah chaired a high-level security review meeting at Raj Bhawan in Jammu, attended by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, senior officials from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and other security agencies. The meeting focused on evaluating the current security landscape, particularly following the military skirmishes between India and Pakistan from May 7 to 10, and preparations for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra.

On Friday, May 30, the Home Minister is scheduled to visit Poonch, one of the worst-affected districts during the recent Pakistani shelling, which resulted in 14 civilian deaths out of the total 28 lives lost. In Poonch, Shah will meet families affected by the shelling, visit the damaged Singh Sabha Gurdwara, and assess the destruction caused by cross-border attacks. He will also interact with BSF jawans at their camp in Poonch and address civilians at the Dak Bungalow to discuss their concerns and demands.

This is Shah’s third visit to Jammu and Kashmir since April 6, following his earlier trips to address the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack and to reaffirm the government’s commitment to curbing terrorism in the region. The Home Minister’s visit has drawn attention from local leaders, with National Conference leader Rattan Lal Gupta urging Shah to announce a comprehensive financial package for those affected by the shelling and to address the long-standing demand for restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Meanwhile, J&K Congress president Tariq Hameed Karra questioned the delay in Shah’s visit, raising concerns about the government’s response to the crisis.
