The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) is helping economically weaker families fulfil their dream of owning permanent homes. Under the scheme, Suresh Patel, a resident of Chaitukhapri village in Dongargarh block of Rajnandgaon district, has fulfilled his long-standing dream of building a pucca house for his family.
Patel said that he previously lived with his wife and son in a kutcha house that was in a dilapidated condition. He earns his livelihood through handicrafts, idol-making and painting, while also taking up daily-wage work whenever possible. His wife also works as a labourer to support the family’s income.
Due to their limited financial resources, constructing a permanent house had remained beyond their means. The family faced several difficulties while living in the kutcha house, particularly during the rainy season, when water entered the premises. The damp conditions also affected Patel’s idol-making and painting work.

Housing Assistance Received in Three Instalments
Patel said he learnt through the Gram Panchayat that his name had been included in the Awas Plus survey list. After submitting the required documents, including his bank account details and Aadhaar card, the process for approval of housing assistance was initiated.
He subsequently received approval to construct a permanent house under PMAY-G. Following the receipt of the first instalment of ₹40,000 in his bank account, construction work began.
Under the scheme, Patel received a total housing assistance amount of ₹1.20 lakh in three instalments. In addition, he benefited from 95 days of wage employment under the employment guarantee scheme.
With the assistance received, he was able to construct a permanent house for his family.
Permanent Home Improves Family’s Living Conditions
Patel said that the completion of the house has provided his family with a safer and more organised living environment. The family no longer faces the same difficulties caused by water entering their previous kutcha house during the rainy season.

The improved housing conditions have also helped him continue his handicraft, idol-making and painting activities without the earlier disruptions caused by water entering the house.
For Patel and his family, the new home represents the fulfilment of a long-held aspiration that had remained difficult to achieve because of financial constraints.
Patel Thanks Prime Minister and Chief Minister
Expressing gratitude for the assistance received under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin, Suresh Patel thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai for the support that enabled him to build a permanent house.
His experience illustrates how housing assistance, combined with wage benefits, helped his family move from a dilapidated kutcha house to a permanent home in Chaitukhapri village.
