Jain monk explains how expectations can lead to anger, greed and strained relationships during Chaturmas discourse in Rajnandgaon

“Expectations make a person unhappy, while hope does not cause the same distress,” said Muni Shreyanshprabh Sagar Ji, disciple of Khartargachchh Gachchhadhipati Maniprabha Sagar Ji, during his Chaturmas discourse in Rajnandgaon.
Speaking at the ongoing Chaturmasik Pravachan at Gyan Vallabh Upashray Bhawan, Muni Shri said that once one expectation is fulfilled, another arises, and the cycle continues to grow. He said that expectations are also associated with anger and greed.
Expectations and Hope
Muni Shreyanshprabh Sagar Ji said that if people learn to live without expectations, their lives can become filled with happiness. He emphasised that individuals should continue to have hope.
He explained that expectations often take a person towards things they do not have. As expectations are fulfilled, they continue to increase, leading to growing greed.
For good deeds, he said, there should not be expectations; instead, there should only be hope for good outcomes.

Expectations Can Affect Relationships
Muni Shri said that living a completely expectation-free life may be somewhat difficult, but it is possible.
He explained that where there is hope, relationships become deeper, whereas expectations can cause relationships to weaken. One can bring happiness, while the other can become a source of sorrow.
He also connected the use of commanding language with expectations. According to him, when an order is not fulfilled, expectations are broken, which can hurt the mind and lead to unhappiness.
He therefore stressed that people should reduce expectations in life, as expectations can increase distance in relationships.
