The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is emerging as an effective initiative to promote clean energy in rural India while reducing household electricity expenses. Setting an example for his village, Manohar Sinha, Sarpanch of Chaitukhapri Gram Panchayat in Dongargarh block, has installed a 3-kilowatt rooftop solar power plant at his residence, inspiring other villagers to embrace renewable energy.
3-kW Rooftop Solar Plant Installed
Sarpanch Manohar Sinha said he applied for the scheme a few months ago. After completing the necessary banking and financing formalities, a 3-kW rooftop solar system was installed at his home around 15–20 days ago.
The total project cost is approximately ₹2 lakh, out of which ₹1.08 lakh will be provided as a subsidy jointly by the Central and State Governments. The remaining amount has been financed through a bank under an easy installment plan, while Sinha contributed an initial payment of around ₹10,000.
Electricity Bills Expected to Drop to Zero
Before installing the solar plant, Sinha’s household electricity bill ranged between ₹700 and ₹800 per month. He now expects his electricity bill to be almost eliminated.
He also hopes to benefit from net metering, under which surplus electricity generated by the rooftop solar system can be exported to the grid, providing additional financial returns.
Inspiring Other Villagers
Sinha said he learned about the scheme through an authorized vendor and decided to take advantage of it. As the first resident in the village to install a rooftop solar plant, his initiative has attracted considerable interest.

Several villagers have visited his home to see the solar installation and gather information about the scheme. He expressed confidence that more residents would soon install rooftop solar systems after witnessing its benefits.
Subsidy Reduces Financial Burden
Highlighting the advantages of the scheme, Sinha said the combined subsidy from the Central and State Governments significantly reduces the financial burden on beneficiaries.
He appealed to citizens to take advantage of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, adopt clean energy, and reduce their electricity expenses while contributing to environmental conservation.
Promoting Clean Energy and Energy Self-Reliance
District officials said the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is encouraging more households across Rajnandgaon to switch to solar energy. Besides lowering electricity bills, the scheme is playing an important role in promoting renewable energy, environmental sustainability, and energy self-reliance.
As more rural households adopt rooftop solar systems, the initiative is expected to accelerate India’s transition toward clean and sustainable energy.
