Bengaluru-based senior tax practitioner and economic affairs expert Ramesh (S.L.) Joshi has hailed the government’s recent reforms in GST and income tax law as “nothing short of amazing, astonishing, and awesome,” crediting the swift changes to the decisive leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to Joshi, the entire set of GST rate schedules has been comprehensively re-written within just 20 days—from the Prime Minister’s Independence Day address on August 15 until early September. This feat, he emphasized, was made possible through extensive groundwork carried out by ministerial officials, the Group of Ministers of the GST Council, and finance secretaries of all states.
In a marathon single-day sitting, the GST Council concluded its meeting even a day ahead of schedule, producing a framework Joshi described as a “true Dussehra–Diwali gift” to the common citizen.

Alongside GST, the government has also advanced a new Income Tax Act, set to come into force well before the next tax year begins. Joshi praised the Act’s simplicity, contrasting it with the long-delayed Direct Tax Code of earlier regimes, which despite 16 years of deliberation “never saw the light of day.”
“These reforms reflect the will of leadership—where there is will, there is a way,” Joshi said, adding that the changes are “all for the benefit of the common citizen.”
Tax professionals across the country often regard Joshi’s independent assessments highly, given his reputation for objectivity and practical insights into India’s fiscal policy landscape.
