The Rukmini Haran episode of the Bhagwat Katha moved devotees to deep emotion on the sixth day of the religious discourse organised by the Gandhi family at Udyachal, Rajnandgaon. The narrative was delivered with profound devotion and eloquence by Pandit Praveen Paliwal of Pandhurna, Madhya Pradesh, who brought alive the divine character of Lord Krishna through the confluence of love, righteousness and moral restraint.

While narrating the episode, Pandit Paliwal described how Rukmini, the daughter of King Bhishmak of Vidarbha, became spiritually drawn to Lord Krishna after hearing about his divine virtues in the royal court. Accepting Krishna as her husband in her heart, Rukmini’s decision was portrayed not merely as an act of love, but as a conscious choice guided by dharma and wisdom.

The storyteller further explained that due to political compulsions, a conspiracy was formed to marry Rukmini to Shishupala, the son of Chedi king Damaghosh. Shishupala, known for his arrogant nature, was also Lord Krishna’s cousin. Krishna had earlier promised Shishupala’s mother that he would forgive his hundred mistakes. However, when Shishupala repeatedly crossed all limits of decorum and insulted Krishna during King Yudhishthira’s Rajsuya Yagya in Indraprastha, Lord Krishna ultimately ended his life to uphold dharma.

The central focus of the discourse then shifted to the Rukmini Haran and marriage episode. Pandit Paliwal narrated how Rukmini sent a message to Lord Krishna through a Brahmin, requesting him to come to Vidarbha and rescue her before the forced marriage. Demonstrating his compassion for devotees, Lord Krishna accepted her plea, defeated all opposing forces and solemnised their marriage according to sacred rituals.

The powerful narration held the audience in rapt attention, with the pandal echoing with devotion, bhajans and chants. Devotees were seen deeply absorbed in the spiritual message of love aligned with righteousness and moral values. The narrator emphasised that the Krishna–Rukmini union is not just a historical tale, but a timeless lesson that love, when rooted in dharma, becomes an ideal for society.
