Actor and filmmaker Randeep Hooda has ignited a debate by drawing attention to the vastly different conditions faced by Indian freedom fighters during their imprisonment under British rule. In a powerful statement, Hooda contrasted the experiences of Veer Savarkar with those of prominent Congress leaders, raising questions about the sacrifices made by the latter.
Hooda pointed out that Mahatma Gandhi, respectfully referred to as Gandhi Ji, lived in the Aga Khan Palace with a monthly allowance of ₹200 during his detention. In stark contrast, Veer Savarkar, a revolutionary freedom fighter, received a meager ₹60 over five years while enduring the brutal conditions of the Cellular Jail in Kala Pani, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Hooda also highlighted that Jawaharlal Nehru, another prominent Congress leader, had access to amenities like a badminton court and a rose garden during his time in jail.
The actor’s remarks have sparked discussions about the sacrifices of freedom fighters, with Hooda questioning whether any Congress leader endured the extreme hardships of Kala Pani, as Savarkar did. The Cellular Jail, infamous for its inhumane conditions, was reserved for those deemed the most dangerous by the British, and Savarkar’s time there remains a symbol of his unyielding fight for India’s independence.
