In a groundbreaking achievement for gender diversity in the aviation sector, IndiGo has welcomed its inaugural all-women batch of 33 maintenance technicians, signaling a strong commitment to fostering women’s participation in traditionally male-dominated fields. This cohort represents a pivotal moment as the airline expands its workforce with skilled professionals trained to uphold the highest standards of aircraft maintenance and safety.

The 33 technicians completed an intensive 18-month training program at the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi (IGRUA) in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, where they underwent rigorous instruction in aircraft systems, troubleshooting, and regulatory compliance. The graduation ceremony, held recently, was a celebratory affair attended by IndiGo’s top leadership, including Chief Human Resources Officer Sunil Kumar and Senior Vice President of Engineering, Santosh Lal, who commended the graduates for their dedication and excellence.

“This batch is not just a group of technicians; they are trailblazers who will inspire generations of women to pursue careers in aviation maintenance,” said Sunil Kumar during the event. He emphasized IndiGo’s broader vision: “We are proud to be at the forefront of creating inclusive opportunities, ensuring that our skies are staffed by the best talent, regardless of gender.”

The initiative aligns with IndiGo’s ongoing efforts to promote women in STEM roles within aviation. Currently, women constitute about 12% of the airline’s engineering and maintenance workforce, with ambitious plans to increase this to 25% by 2025. This all-women batch is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing operational efficiency while breaking barriers and encouraging more young women to enter the industry.

Industry experts hail this development as a transformative step for Indian aviation, where female representation in maintenance has historically lagged. As IndiGo continues to grow as one of the world’s largest low-cost carriers, such programs underscore the airline’s role in driving social change alongside business innovation. The new technicians will soon join IndiGo’s fleet operations, contributing to the seamless travel experience for millions of passengers across India and beyond.
