Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched a scathing attack on Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, dismissing his allegations of irregularities by the Election Commission (EC) as baseless and politically motivated. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Fadnavis accused Gandhi of “lying” and “stealing the mandate of the public” to cover up Congress’s electoral losses, while warning that such claims tarnish the credibility of constitutional institutions.

Addressing Gandhi’s recent assertions about discrepancies in voter turnout, Fadnavis stated, “Neither has there been theft of votes in Maharashtra nor in any other parts of the nation. Rahul Gandhi is just lying.” He pointed out inconsistencies in Gandhi’s claims, noting, “Last time, he mentioned that in Maharashtra, the number of votes increased by 75 lakh. Now, he is saying that one crore votes have increased.” The Chief Minister accused Gandhi of fabricating figures to “suppress his loss” and predicted that the Congress leader would face further defeats in upcoming elections.

Fadnavis further alleged that Gandhi’s attacks on the EC were a deliberate attempt to malign constitutional bodies. “He is maligning the image of constitutional bodies of the nation. I condemn it, and the public will teach him a lesson in the coming elections,” he declared. The BJP leader’s remarks come in response to Gandhi’s ongoing criticism of the EC, where he has raised concerns over voter list issues and the integrity of the electoral process.

The Chief Minister’s strong rebuttal aligns with the BJP’s broader narrative, which accuses the opposition of undermining democratic institutions when faced with electoral setbacks. Earlier today, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra also criticized Gandhi, alleging selective outrage only after Congress’s losses. The escalating war of words reflects the intensifying political rivalry between the ruling BJP and the Congress-led INDIA alliance ahead of key state elections.

Political observers note that Fadnavis’s remarks are strategically aimed at rallying public support by framing Gandhi’s allegations as an attack on India’s democratic framework. Meanwhile, the Congress has doubled down on its demand for transparency from the EC, setting the stage for a heated political showdown. The Election Commission has not yet commented on the controversy, but the issue is likely to dominate political discourse in the coming days.

As Maharashtra gears up for future polls, Fadnavis’s warning signals a robust defense of the state’s electoral process, while Gandhi’s allegations continue to fuel debate over the credibility of India’s democratic institutions.
