For years, the Minto Bridge underpass in Delhi was synonymous with monsoon misery, transforming into a virtual lake with every heavy downpour, stranding commuters and submerging vehicles. However, this monsoon season tells a different story. The notorious underpass, connecting Connaught Place to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, has remained remarkably dry despite relentless rains, marking a significant milestone in Delhi’s battle against waterlogging. The credit for this transformation goes to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and the proactive measures taken by the Delhi government.

A Game-Changing Makeover
The Minto Bridge underpass, once a symbol of Delhi’s monsoon chaos, has undergone a remarkable overhaul. The Public Works Department (PWD), under the leadership of Minister Parvesh Verma, implemented a comprehensive monsoon action plan that included thorough drain cleaning, repairs to stormwater pipelines, and the installation of high-capacity pumps. A large underground stormwater storage tank near Bharat Mandapam, another chronic waterlogging zone, has also been repaired to enhance drainage efficiency. These efforts have ensured smooth traffic flow even during heavy rainfall, a stark contrast to the days when buses were stranded in floodwaters.

CM Rekha Gupta’s Vision
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has been lauded for her hands-on approach in tackling Delhi’s longstanding infrastructure challenges. “We are solving the backlog of the last 27 years, one by one,” Gupta said during a recent inspection of waterlogging-prone areas. Her administration’s focus on modernizing the city’s drainage system, coupled with relentless monitoring and coordination between departments, has turned the tide against monsoon flooding. The dry underpass stands as a testament to her commitment to transforming Delhi into a resilient, commuter-friendly city.

Public Applause and a New Hope
The transformation of Minto Bridge has sparked widespread appreciation among Delhiites, who have long endured traffic snarls and waterlogged roads. Local resident Anjali Sharma shared her excitement, saying, “It’s unbelievable to see Minto Bridge dry during the rains. This is a big relief for daily commuters like me.” The success has also inspired confidence in the government’s ongoing efforts to address other waterlogging hotspots across the city, with areas like Prembari Underpass, Ring Road, and Saket Metro corridor also reporting no flooding this season.

A Step Toward a Flood-Free Delhi
The Delhi government’s proactive measures, including the deployment of advanced pumping systems and regular maintenance of drainage infrastructure, signal a broader commitment to mitigating monsoon-related disruptions. While challenges remain in low-lying areas and unauthorized colonies, the success at Minto Bridge offers a blueprint for future projects. As Delhi continues to modernize its infrastructure, the dry underpass stands as a beacon of progress, proving that with determined leadership and strategic planning, the city can overcome even its toughest challenges.
