In a remarkable example of rural women’s entrepreneurship and economic empowerment, the Jai Maa Bamleshwari Women’s Self-Help Group (SHG) of Chhuikhadan has established an inspiring model of self-reliance. By creating a unique identity through innovative betel-based products, the group has taken women empowerment in the region to a new height.

At the recently held Rajyotsav events in Khairagarh and Raipur, the group showcased products such as Paan Refresh, Paan Laddoo, Paan Herbal Tea, and Paan Chocolate. Impressively, the group recorded sales of over ₹22,000 across just two events — a testament to their skill, innovation, and unity. Members say the success reflects their rigorous training, dedication, and collective effort.

Guidance from Administration, Training from Scientists
With continuous encouragement from Collector Indrajit Singh Chandraval and District Panchayat CEO Prem Kumar Patel, the group adopted modern packaging techniques. Scientists Dr. B.S. Asati and Dr. Khushboo Tandon from the Chhuikhadan Betel Research Centre provided a seven-day scientific training programme, drastically improving product quality, preservation, and packaging standards.

Strong Support from Public Representatives
Initial challenges such as procuring premium betel leaves, product preservation, and reaching wider markets were resolved with technical support from Indira Gandhi Agricultural University. Public representatives Sajjak Khan, Sanjay Mahobia, and Partika Mahobia, along with the Horticulture Department, are actively promoting betel cultivation and the construction of barejas (betel leaf houses) among local farmers.

‘Paan Café’ Coming Soon
With increasing consumer appreciation for the freshness, flavour, and packaging of the products, district authorities are preparing to launch a ‘Paan Café’ in Chhuikhadan. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai had announced this initiative during his visit on August 13, 2025.

Strengthening Household Economies
Group members Asha Mahobia and Tripti Vaishnav shared that the income from these betel-based products has significantly improved the financial stability of their families. They highlighted that betel is rich in calcium, thiamine, niacin, Vitamin C, and potent antioxidants — making the products health-friendly as well.

The Rani Avantibai Lodhi Agricultural College, Chhuikhadan, has also provided the group with specialised training in marketing, pricing, and sales techniques. Inspired by their success, many more women from nearby villages are stepping forward to join similar entrepreneurial initiatives.

Looking Ahead
The group now aims to scale up production, develop new value-added betel products, and strengthen their brand identity. Their journey exemplifies how proper guidance, innovation, and unity can reshape rural India’s economic landscape — a true reflection of the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
