Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Gurdaspur, Punjab, on September 9, 2025, to personally assess the catastrophic flood situation that has ravaged the state, demonstrating the Central Government’s commitment to supporting Punjab in its hour of need. The visit, which included an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas and meetings with local residents and officials, follows a preliminary assessment by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, as highlighted by BJP leader Vijay Sampla.

Speaking on the Prime Minister’s visit, Sampla emphasized the collective spirit of Punjab’s residents, who have come together to support one another amidst the crisis. “Residents of entire Punjab are working to help each other. Seeing the situation here, PM Modi first sent Agriculture Minister Shivraj Chouhan here. He came here and took stock. Only after his report, PM Modi decided to come here and take stock,” Sampla stated. He underscored that the Prime Minister’s decisions for Punjab’s relief and rehabilitation will be informed by these on-ground assessments, ensuring targeted and effective measures.

The floods, described as among the worst in Punjab’s recent history, have claimed 46 lives, affected over 3.87 lakh people, and submerged nearly 1.84 lakh hectares of farmland across 23 districts, with Gurdaspur being one of the hardest-hit areas. The Prime Minister’s itinerary included a review meeting at Tibri Army Cantonment, interactions with flood-affected families, and discussions with National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Aapda Mitra teams to evaluate ongoing relief efforts.

The Central Government’s proactive approach, as evidenced by Chouhan’s earlier visit and the deployment of central teams to assess damages, has raised hopes for a substantial relief package. Punjab’s state government has requested ₹20,000 crore to address the extensive losses, while farmer organizations have demanded even higher compensation to rebuild lives and livelihoods.PM Modi’s visit, coupled with his assurance that the Centre stands “shoulder to shoulder” with Punjab’s people, signals a comprehensive response to the crisis.

As rescue and relief operations continue with the support of the Indian Army, BSF, and NDRF, the Prime Minister’s direct engagement underscores a commitment to restoring normalcy and supporting the resilient people of Punjab.
