Under the Ullas Nav Bharat Literacy Programme, Ullas Melas were organised on January 26 across every village panchayat of Rajnandgaon district, marking a significant step toward promoting adult literacy and life skills among neo-literates.
The fairs witnessed enthusiastic participation from newly literate learners and students of Ullas Literacy Centres, who set up themed stalls aimed at encouraging literacy education. Through creative displays and educational materials, participants conveyed awareness messages related to reading, writing, numeracy, and daily life skills. Certificates were also distributed to learners who successfully cleared the evaluation assessment examination.

District Project Officer, District Literacy Mission Authority, Ms Rashmi Singh informed that this year’s Ullas Mela focused on consumer rights and life skills. Key themes included the right to safety, right to information, right to choose, right to be heard, right to redressal and consumer education, along with life skills such as financial literacy, digital literacy, legal awareness, health and hygiene, and electoral literacy.
She stated that the primary objective of the fair was to enhance creativity and self-confidence among neo-literates, encourage self-learning, and strengthen the concept of learning by doing. The initiative also aimed to help learners revisit basic language concepts, understand matras in Hindi, and relearn fundamental mathematical principles.

Several interactive activities were organised during the mela, including Ring Feko–Letter Pehchano, Ungli Daud, Pehchano Kaun, Jod Machine, Aao Ghatayein, Meri Ghadi Tumhara Samay, Jodi Banao, and Chitra Dekho Kahani Banao. Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) tools and Teaching Learning Materials (TLM) were extensively used to make learning engaging and practical.
The event drew the presence of local public representatives, villagers, school students, principals, headmasters, cluster coordinators and other dignitaries, reflecting strong community involvement.

It is noteworthy that the Ullas Nav Bharat Literacy Programme is being implemented in line with the recommendations of the National Education Policy 2020. Under the initiative, illiterate individuals aged above 15 years from rural and urban wards are identified and taught by volunteer educators. After completing the learning cycle, assessment examinations are conducted, and successful learners receive certificates issued by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), Noida, New Delhi.
The programme aims to empower adults who were deprived of education due to various reasons by equipping them with numeracy skills, life competencies and essential everyday knowledge, ultimately integrating them into mainstream learning and social participation.
