The Centre has approved an additional 2.8 million tonnes of FCI rice for ethanol production under the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) programme, raising the total allocation to 5.2 million tonnes for 2024-25. While aimed at reducing fuel imports and emissions, the move has sparked criticism over food security risks and the diversion of staple grains for industrial use.
