The Poshan Vatika initiative under the Poshan Abhiyaan is transforming child health and education at Rajnandgaon’s Anganwadi centres by providing fresh, organic vegetables through on-site gardens and engaging children in play-based early learning. This integrated approach is combating malnutrition while enhancing cognitive development among young children.

UNICEF India officials visited Anganwadi Centre No. 4 in Somni, Rajnandgaon, to witness the innovative Potth Laika Chaupal initiative, which promotes child nutrition, health, and early learning. The visit emphasized the program’s role in enhancing early childhood development and its potential to serve as a model for other regions.

Anganwadi centres in rural Rajnandgaon are evolving into vibrant early learning spaces, shaping the future of young children through playful education and nutritional support. Model Anganwadi Centres such as Centre No. 1 and 3 at Bhothipar Khurd and Centre No. 3 at Singhola are providing a pre-nursery-like environment where children recite rhymes, learn alphabets, and engage in activity-based learning. With colourful wall paintings, birthday calendars, and well-maintained play areas, these centres have become hubs of early childhood development. In addition to educating children, they offer hot nutritious meals for children and pregnant women, while promoting health awareness among adolescent girls. Various government schemes including the Chief Minister’s Child Reference Scheme, Maternity Benefit Schemes, and Poshan Abhiyaan are being effectively implemented under the supervision of the Department of Women and Child Development.
